This is Connaught Cemetery and Thiepval Wood, part of the area referred to by Teddy in his description of how the saps were dug out from here. This is the first cemetery south of the Ancre on what were the 1 July front-lines; 228 men killed that day are buried here.

Taken from the Schwaben Redoubt, this shows part of the ground over which the 36th (Ulster) Division attacked.

The boundary between the 36th (Ulster) Division and the 32nd Division is marked by the line of green-field crops nearest camera, and the ploughed field beyond. This was where the Ulstermen were advancing from the edge of Thiepval Wood, across Thiepval Road moving from right to left in this photograph. The troops of the 32nd Division were advancing up the slope towards the village, where they were cut down in swathes.
